Google MUM algorithm

Google MUM Algorithm Can Do More than Rank Websites

In the hope of providing users with new and better ways to explore and discover topics on the platform, Google redesigned the search experience with the MUM algorithm, earlier in 2021. It is an addition to its already existing search engine algorithm.

The MUM algorithm has the ability to look through different images and languages to find relevant answers for search queries. While text-based searches have been common, introducing search with images has made MUM a sensation.

What is MUM?

Google’s MUM, Multitask Unified Model, takes an AI-powered approach to enhance the capabilities of online searches. While searching the web, users face multiple searches, language and geographical barriers because the search engine lacks intuition.

The MUM algorithm aims to avoid multiple searches that users have to do in order to gain and compare deeper insights into a subject matter. It will use its unique ability to interpret texts, images, podcasts, and videos to bring solutions.

It has the ability to understand at least 75 languages, which means that it can easily pool results to offer users a more comprehensive and holistic search experience, including answers to complex queries.

Google’s MUM is meant to redefine the way users find and use the information available across the internet. Because MUM takes a people-friendly approach in interpreting meaning, it offers the most comprehensive and far-reaching search engine capability than ever before.

What Does Google’s John Mueller Have to Say?

When Google’s John Mueller was questioned on the number of search queries that were affected by the MUM algorithm, he remarked that it’s not possible to know because of the multi-purpose nature of the MUM algorithm, making it possible to use it in contexts that go beyond ranking.

What makes the MUM algorithm so incredible is the fact that it can hunt for answers through documents available on the web and can also allow pictures as a part of searches. As a result, a question directed towards John Mueller regarding MUM’s impact on search results seems almost inevitable.

Mueller admitted to not being aware of the number of search queries affected by MUM but also clarified how it can be difficult to have such a clear understanding of the matter. Because the numbers keep changing rapidly, having a fixed number is not possible for both BERT or MUM.

Google MUM Algorithm Can Do More than Rank Websites

He followed up by mentioning how MUM can be seen as a “multi-purpose machine learning library” that can be applied to a variety of tasks, and not just ranking. Users can rely on it to understand things at a much deeper level, which would be intertwined with several kinds of search results. Hence, it is not possible to have a fixed number.

While MUM has a hyped reputation, Mueller resorted to a more realistic and logical description to show that the algorithm does things that may not be as flashy as people may find it from the outside. When it comes to search quality, Google is quite happy with the way such machine learning models have been functioning.

Google’s MUM Algorithm Has More Potential Than We May Think!

Through John Mueller, we know a little bit more about Google’s MUM algorithm. While is applied for ranking purposes, its utility goes way beyond. There are multiple other tasks that the algorithm can handle and perform, which involve parts of search results. It is now understood that MUM can comprehend things in a fine-grain detail.

Due to its fine-grained level of understanding, it is safe to assume that the Google MUM algorithm can do more than rank websites.
